Tuesday, August 28. When we left Iowa City, if was off to Illinois. First stop was pie at Good’s Furniture in Kewanee, Illinois. Pie at a furniture store, you ask? Yes – but this is no ordinary furniture store. Besides a huge amount of furniture, Good’s has a bed and breakfast, a showroom that includes a pond full of fish, and a restaurant that specializes in what else, pie. In fact, the pie at Good’s is so well known that they will sell 175 of them this Labor Day weekend.

We had a lovely lunch and then sampled their pie selection, which ranged from raspberry, banana cream, and apple to the more exotic sour cream raisin. We tried them all and enjoyed them so much we had trouble deciding the winner. Then we got to talk to Cathy Gardner, the woman who has been baking pies at Good’s for more than 25 years. Her story embodies why the tour is focused on pie – the recipes she uses at the store come from her husband’s grandmother and she talked about the seasonal pies she makes, ranging from summer’s “traffic jam pie” (with every berry under the sun) to her family’s favorite Christmas pie.

After lunch and our chat with Cathy, we waddled out to our bus to keep rolling on to Chicago where it was time to check out sustainable food in the big city.
