August 6, 2007

On our way to Ashland, we stopped off at Mt Shasta, CA, to visit their farmers market. We were invited by John and Kirsten, the founders of the narket, as well as to very happy, generous farmers.

By some standards, the market might seem small, maybe around 10 vendors, but they had a harpist playing and some of the happiest people I've ever met. The market is also where everyone in town gathers, so it's not just a place to buy great tasting, local food, it's also the town's community center.

When we were there, the area judge was shopping, as was a produce buyer for a large conventional food company. Everyone stopped to ask us about the tour and what we were doing. People were all coming over to the bus and pointing to us as we drove by -thank goodness the url is on there!

This was the first place we visited that really showed me how much community is wrapped up in a farmers market. People don't just come here to shop - they come by to catch up on the local news and to catch up with each other. Living in a big city, I must say, I do miss that.

The market also has a beautiful view of Mt Shasta, a volcano that has been known to spit steam. So Mt Shasta is not just a friendly place, it's a beautiful one to boot!
