City Slicker Farms- Oakland, CA
by Diane
August 4, 2007
After feasting on the bounty at the Lakeshore Farmers Market, we headed out to West Oakland to City Slickers Farm, an amazing urban farm that grows a wide variety of food in a very small space. The most inspiring aspect of this farm is that people pay what they want, including nothing if they have no money. This is an excellent way to offer fresh, highly nutritious, sustainable food to people who might not have access to it or be able to afford it.
They’ve also been working with residents to help them plant vegetable gardens in their yard. They’ll come in and test the land for lead and tell the homeowners what to plant, and bring soil and seeds so they can begin to grow their own food. What better way to allow people to reconnect with the land?
Noelle will be back shortly with much more information on our time there! (I spent a lot of it playing with the chickens and ducks so missed some of the talk…)
