(Note: Cathy Garypie is a noted Chicago-ite and happens to be the wife of Paul Kogut, one of the musicians that played at our event at Crust.)

The sun was setting and the night air was beginning to cool when the guests began to arrive. The setting was a patio to the back/side of the building housing the incomparable Crust restaurant. Lovely black wrought-iron furniture accommodated the lively crowd and orange candles danced at the center of each table. The air was filled with the soulful blues of guitarist Guy King and the talented keyboard player accompanying him. Over healthy glasses of organic wine, friendships were forged and solidified.

Soon salads consisting of fresh organic greens and a sprinkle of carrots and baby plum tomatoes were served with a light vinaigarette and a short round of speeches was heard. Ms. Jenna Rose explained “A Fresh Squeeze” and the multitude of information it holds for the “green” Chicagoan. Ms. Diane Hatz next spoke of Sustainable Table, the Eat Well Guided Tour of America and Pie Across America. Guests also heard from City Farm Director Ken Dunn and caught his sustainable enthusiasm. Finally, the owner of the hosting establishment, Michael Altenberg spoke and was cheered unabashedly when he mentioned that Crust will shortly be the first certified organic restaurant in the Midwest. (Note from Diane: Crust already has their certification so is actually is first certified organic restaurant in the Midwest!)

All at once the sweet sounds of jazz guitarist Paul Kogut were heard while a flurry of servers swarmed the patio delivering sumptuous flatbread pizza pies: sausage, broccoli/cheddar, herb/cheese, and pepperonata. Cries of “Fantastic!” “Delicious!” and “Spectacular!” were heard repeatedly.

The finale was no less spectacular: a pie buffet from Chicago certified organic bakery Bleeding Heart. Plates filled with tasty crust and a variety of fruit fillings were quickly cleaned.

Fully sated and happy to have supported City Farm, the crowd slowly dissipated into the cool night under a bright moon.
