Crust – Chicago, IL
by Patty
Wednesday, August 29. In the evening we were lucky enough to go to a party at Crust, the first certified organic restaurant in the Midwest. The party was a benefit for City Farm (the “mobile” farm I raved about earlier). We got to hang out on the back porch of Crust (where it didn’t rain, probably because Crust manager Amy commanded the sky that it would not) with cool folks that like local food. And we ate a lot of excellent pizza pie from Crust and unbelievable fruit pies from Bleeding Heart Bakery, an organic sustainable bakery that produces “punk rock pastries.” I had a fascinating conversation with Vinnie from Bleeding Heart who was telling war stories of making motorcycle shaped cakes complete with riders (evidently it involves rice krispy treats and fondant – who knew?) and what it’s like to be on the Food Network.
A fabulous time was had by all and the evening at Crust was a perfect end to a great day in Chicago.
