JUST FOOD PRESENTS "FOOD
JUSTICE AND THE PUBLIC GOOD"
A New York City Summit on Farms and Food
WHAT:
Just Food, a non-profit organization that works to develop a just and sustainable food system in the New York City region, presents "Food Justice and The Public Good: A New York City Summit on Farms and Food," a day-long marathon of workshops and roundtables bringing together farmers, consumers, and experts to share information, increase awareness about and find solutions to a number of issues pertaining to the city's local food system. The event will end with a fine wine and cheese reception accompanied by live jazz.
Workshops and roundtables will focus on some of today's hottest food topics — especially in the wake of the first U.S. case of Mad Cow disease — including nutrition, "slow food," school lunch safety, GMOs, food irradiation, farmland preservation, and bringing farmers closer to consumers. Speakers will include a host of well-known personalities and experts, both local and national, from Savoy's Executive Chef and head of Chef's Collaborative Peter Hoffman, and Dan Barber of Blue Hill Restaurant, to Bill Niman, owner of Niman Ranch, a pioneer in naturally raising delicious beef, pork, and lamb, Dr. Michael Hansen of the Consumer Policy Institute, Kathy Lawrence of the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture, and many more.
The Summit is co-sponsored by the Nutrition and Food Science, the Public Health Nutrition, and the Dietetic Internship programs at Hunter College for the City University of New York; the GRACE ; Heifer International Northeast Programs; WHY (World Hunger Year); The National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture; The Northeast Organic Farming Association of NY; Greenmarket; NY Farms; Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group, and Cornell University's Community, Food, and Agriculture Program.
Just Food envisions a strong regional food system that incorporates a diversity of rural farms and a robust urban farming component, preserving ecosystems, promoting social justice and nutrition, and invigorating rural and urban economies. Just Food's programs include CSA in NYC, the city's only technical assistance and program development effort bringing Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) to NYC communities. CSA in NYC helps promote agricultural stability on a larger regional scale by connecting rural Northeast farmers with New Yorkers of all income levels. And The City Farms program, the city's only program that is devoted entirely to increasing food production, marketing and distribution via community gardens throughout NYC.
