Eggnog
Eggnog belongs to the winter, or at least its onset. Rich and heavy with froth, foam, cream, and--depending on the recipe--spirits, the beverage is a soft insulator against the cold. Appropriately enough, it seems that eggnog's ancestors were concocted to serve that very purpose and so offset the arrival of winter and its attendant weather-related infirmities.
Climate Change
So how is food—supposedly life-sustaining stuff—one of the key factors in an environmental crisis that threatens the basis of life on earth? A big part of the answer is in the rapid and radical twentieth-century transformation of our food system from sustainably based, locally focused production, to a fossil-fuel addicted industrialized system.
Cider Rules the House
A common thread binds most apple growers, large and small, together—cider. Cider production was once simply viewed as a cost-effective way to deal with excess or unsatisfactory apples, but much has changed. 'Now people look at cider as a value-added product, not a product of last resort.'
