FoodCorps Accepting Applications for Another Round of Young Food Heroes

We've been following the inspirational project that is FoodCorps since its inception - in fact, its co-founder Deb Eschmeyer was one of our first Heroes. We are excited to hear that the Food Corps is now accepting applications for next year's service members. An Ohio farmgirl at heart, Deb is a tour de force in the good food movement, as the voice of the Farm to School Network and the burgeoning "domestic peace corps" called FoodCorps, which places young people directly in schools districts to provide them a better connection with local farmers.

Tuckahoe Students Get Their Hands Dirty

"All I need is a song in my heart, food in my belly, and love in my family," sang the second grade class of the Tuckahoe School on Earth Day. The school, in Southampton, New York, recently won a grant to build a community garden on school grounds, one of five across Suffolk County awarded funds through the Heart Links Project of Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The upcoming Food Day, October 24th, 2011, is feeling like the first Earth Day in 1970, when people who were frustrated by lack of action finally had a forum to express their concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes and air in the US. Similarly, Food Day will be an opportunity for food activists and impassioned citizens to voice our concerns about the current industrial food system.
