More on Money and Food
Seems like great minds are thinking alike this week, pondering the possibilities of dietary intake and how it relates to our pocketbooks. While we endure the difficulties (and wonders--it really is nice to hit the market instead of grabbing take-out for lunch) of eating local on a budget, the Governor of Oregon has embarked on his own food-budget challenge: the Food Stamp Challenge (this from Salem News). Dubbing this week, April 23-29, "Hunger Awareness Week", Governor Ted Kulongoski has encouraged his fellow Oregonians to take the challenge along with him and his wife--to subsist on a food-stamp budget of $3 a day. We thought we had it rough on $68 a week! We will be eager to hear how they make out, and we appreciate Gov. Kulongoski's devotion to this important aspect of food politics.
Similarly, The New York Times put out another great article by Michael Pollen about how many calories a dollar will getcha these days, and more importantly, the connection between nutrition and price, and how farm subsidies factor in to the equation.
