Gearing Up for Eating Local (on a Budget)
Well, it's just a few more days until the kick-off of the Penny-Wise Eat Local Challenge. For those of you who missed our slightly misinformed (we thought it'd already happened!) earlier post , check out the details at their blog. Hopefully, those who take the challenge will successfully de-bunk the common misconception that eating local is far too expensive for the average person.
So far, Diane (our fearless leader), Megan (our fantastic program manager), Destin Joy (Eat Well Guide manager extraordinaire) and I, Leslie (bloggy media contact) have committed to taking the challenge. A few of us have confessed to being a little nervous about the whole deal, and a two of us (Megan and me) have already decided that we can't do without our coffee, but will include its cost in our budget.
Megan has graciously offered to pick up a few local items for the office from the Park Slope Food Coop, and (weather permitting) we'll be walking down to the Union Square farmer's market Monday to gather groceries. I might have to go Saturday, because I know that the folks from Bobolink Dairy are there on Saturdays and I fell in love with their End Game cheese a while back. And of course, we'll be combing through the Eat Well Guide to find sustainably-produced meat, eggs, poultry, and dairy products from within our 250-mile radius.
You can bet we'll be eating over-priced imported food like it's going out of style this weekend, just to get it out of our systems.

You're so welcome, Jonathan--thanks for making such great cheese! It's such a nice day here in NY I might have to sneak down to the farmers market on my lunch today--though if I do I will have undoubtedly eaten all the cheese by Monday when the challenge starts.
And Dawn, you're right, it really is exciting that the eating locally (and sustainably!) is getting so much attention in connection with earth day...you should fill us in on the Lester Brown talk, maybe on the forum? (http://www.themeatrix.com/board/)

Okay, I have to fess up. I have to go to Chicago for the Green Festival, to celebrate Earth Day and to man a Sustainable Table booth. I don't get back until Monday afternoon, so I'm going to have to start a little late - late Monday or perhaps Tuesday. And if I can't get to the Union Square Farmer's Market Monday after I return, I just might starve.... But, I will do my best. I guess it'll be a lot of Hawthorne Valley cheese on Hawthorne Valley sourdough rye bread for the week.... I hope anyone doing this will share tips on where we can find food!

Thank you for the kind words about Bobolink cheese! As fate would have it, we are only at Union Square on Fridays: on Saturdays and Thursdays we are at Lincoln Center Greenmarket (66th and Bwy).
We are also available on the web 24/7, and open at the farm Wed-Sat: see the website for details. Again, thanks!

I was very pleased to see the Chron article (on BART on my way to Lester Brown's excellent talk) yesterday. So appropriate for Earth Week!
What a challenge! Doubtless the most-reported facet will be where people gave way to temptation.
But 250 miles is a long ways, and includes the rich and abundant farms of Sonoma County (Redwood Hill Farms yogurt, Spring Hill cheese, Sonoma lamb, Preston Vineyard's Moscato Curioso). Too bad it's not salmon season, though.
