Wal-Mart's Organics Could Shake Up Retail
According to the Associated Press, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is throwing its weight behind organic products, a move that experts say could have the same lasting effect on environmental practices that Wal-Mart has had on prices by forcing suppliers and competitors to keep up.
Putting new items on the shelf this year, from organic cotton baby clothes to ocean fish caught in ways that don't harm the environment, is part of a broader green policy launched last year to meet consumer demand, cut costs for things like energy and packaging and burnish a battered reputation.

I'm not sure what to think about this - will this make organic food more available to others? Or will this lessen the organic standards so large agribusiness companies can fall under the organic umbrella?

Thanks so much! And I agree with you - I don't think we can really make this change unless we get people to ask questions and really get to know where their food comes from. Hopefully, Sustainable Table and The Meatrix will be able to help with that!

Yes, I am concerned with your comment regarding Wal Mart's efforts perhaps being a contributing force to the Corporate Ag business efforts to fall under the organic umbrella. Much like the pharmaceutical giants with the natural supplement industry..."if we can't beat them then join them" and they certainly did resulting with many smaller health food\supplement businesses and their suppliers going out of business.
The current and growing numbers of educated consumers are using their buying power to successfully make a difference. This pressure is forcing the corporate giants to find more ways to fool the people. I believe they are not simple going to turn over their business profits or take on the cost associated with the healthiest way to produce our food unless forced too.
These industry giants have the money to manipulate the truth. "Organic" now is just a word and they know how to use it in manipulating the masses. Governing bodies for certification are popping up everywhere and the unsuspecting consumer who thinks he/she is doing the right thing by buying 'organic' are being swindled by a slanted marketing label. In many cases, less than 5% of a product needs to contain organic ingredients to be labeled Organic and even those organic ingredients could have been grown in unhealthy mediums!
"100% Certified organic" with ingredients certified by a highly respected governing body, is a healthier goal. We have to keep up the pressure and like fascinated two year olds, keep on asking why, when, where, how and then, ask again! There is no doubt that the power is with the people especially when the people are united with common goals.
Thank you all for the efforts, I am thrilled and encouraged with the work being done here!
