NEWS: Could You Go Locavore?

You won't find it in the dictionary, but "locavore"-- one who tries to eat only locally-produced food-- is a new term you may want add to your vocabulary, especially given the world's looming energy crisis.

The word comes from a group of women, the Locavores, who are challenging their fellow San Franciscoans to "celebrate their foodshed" this August by only eating foods grown or harvested within a 100 mile radius of the city.

The campaign, called "Celebrate Your Foodshed: Eat Locally," is designed both to raise awareness about sustainable agriculture and to reconnect people with the farmers and farms that produce their food.

You've probably heard the statistics before, but food now travels an average of 1,500 miles before it reaches our tables. Although it may not save the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, eating locally is at least a baby step toward a greener, more energy efficient lifestyle. It's also a great way to support your local economy.

The Capital Press and the San Francisco Chronicle both did short pieces on the group (SFC's is a more comprehensive piece that even includes recipes), but to learn even more go directly to the Locavore website. If you live in the Bay area you may even think about signing up.

As it turns out, the Locavores aren't the first to make a game of buying local food. The DC-based PR firm Vanguard Communications has made a habit of challenging its employees to buy local food for one month of the year. They've been a bit more flexible about their distance radius (allowing 250 miles), but the principle is the same.

From farmers markets to CSAs, the fact is more and more people are becoming aware of the many benefits that come from buying local. "Locavore" may end up in the dictionary after all.

I like that the Locavore website has, in the guidelines, some ideas about how to prioritize your choices. (If not local, then organic. If not organic , then family farm).
I also like that Locavore kind of also means 'crazy eater'. Living la vida locavore.
