I made some popcorn with salt and nutritional yeast for our homeschool group's Halloween party a couple of years ago. There were all kinds of snacks, including candy and cookies. The popcorn was the most popular treat there--closely followed by apples. I think our group may not be exactly normal....

Hi Cindy, I think that the only problem with using olive oil is that it's not as good at high heat. I think it has a lower smoking point... though I still use olive oil to make popcorn! Coconut oil is better at higher heat, and sounds yummy.

And Family Farmer, I'm glad you went stove top, I read recently about something bad in the lining of the microwave bags (PFOA and BPA?).

An air popper could be fun too, avoid the oil all together and top your popcorn with melted local butter! And I love to sprinkle nutritional yeast on my popcorn too.

We eat a ton of popcorn, and have to admit we have fallen into the micro pop rut. It was national popcorn day a few weeks back, and we set a new standard for our popping, the stove top. We have been sharing it with friends and are continuously getting"can you bring that again?!" Like they have never had fresh popped before. This week we even tossed our popcorn with a bit of nori komi furikake rice seasoning, the sesame seeds and seaweed add extra health benefits.

I make my popcorn on the stove, and have for years(well always have except for a couple of years when I used the nukeable stuff). What is the problem with using olive oil? It is the only liquid oil I use.
