food-inc-goodThis post is from Sarah Newman over at Take Part:

It’s hard to see Food, Inc. and not be inspired.  Ok, so most people might not be selling their house and quitting their office job to become full time farmers  but the movie certainly inspires people to change something in their lives.  There’s a lot of super simple but highly effective things you can do to transition off of a corn-based diet, lessen your carb(on) food/footprint, support local farmers and choose humanely raised meats.  We are thrilled by the deluge of emails we’ve received from people across the country who are inspired by the film and want to make changes but are looking for some help.

Below is a list to some of the most commonly asked questions.

    1. Where can I buy organic food? The Eat Well Guide is a handy resource which lists local farmers markets, farms, restaurants and Community Supported Agricultural programs in your area, all of which offer organic and sustainable foods.

    2. Where can I buy sustainably raised meat? Eat Wild is a user-friendly resource with listings for grass-fed meat and dairy near you.   Do you need some clarification on all of those confusing terms used to describe meat products, such pasture-raised, non-confined or natural? If so, Sustainable Table’s wallet-sized gloassary of meat production will help you better understand what these each mean.

    3. What is the status of Kevin’s law? Unfortunately, nothing right now. However, you can support the ongoing work of Barb Kowlacyk and her mom, Pat Buck,  for safer food standards nationwide through their organization, Center for Foodborne Illness, Research and Prevention.

    4. How can I get in touch with Michael Pollan? Yes, he’s a hot commodity right now, but you can chat with him!  There will be live-chat with him this Thursday at 3PM PST on Facebook.  Click here for details.

    5. I didn’t see Food, Inc. When is it coming to my town? We’re constantly adding new cities and theaters, but if yours isn’t listed here, tell your local theater that you want to see it!  And, stay tuned for the DVD release date.

Assuming these actions whet your appetite, don’t forget to check out the official film site which offers lots of juicy resources.  The 10 tips will help to jump start some lifestyle changes you can make now.  Learn more about issues raised in the film, ranging from workers rights to genetic engineering and connect with organizations leading efforts to reform our industrial food system. The enthusiasm generated by Food, Inc. is evidence that it is helping to galvanize people across the country who are all committed to making sure we all have access to safe, healthy and sustainable foods.

    1. The very best way to do something NOW is to get to your local farmers market ASAP. The more support we give to local farmers, the more locally produced food they will be able to supply for us.

A visit to your farmers market is not only a shopping experience, it is a learning experience. Talk to the farmers, ask them about what they are selling, buy a vegetable that was picked that morning, or buy some eggs that were layed in the last 24 hours!

Vote with your fork and with your $$$’s for wholesome, healthy food.

    2. Marina Florida

I would go to the local farmers markets in my community, but it is not run by and for farmers, and all produce is brought in from places as far away as China. Who really wants Chinese garlic in the light of the recent issues with everything Chinese. No one can explain to me why Florida, which is majorly agricultural can’t provide real farmers for real farmers markets.
We do our best by buying certified organics from our local grocery store, and drive approximately 60 miles each way to Whole Foods once a month or so to get sustainably raised meats.

    3. i just saw food inc movie.what is this world comming to? GREED!!! i have learned so much and what nothing to do with these companies that are enslaving humanity so some fat cats can get rich.it is disgustion how these companies treat framers , strong arming them to get on board and work along side them, or lose their lively hood .this movie has opened my eyes, and I WILL TELL EVERY ONE I KNOW ABOUT THIS !!!! more people need to see this movie.from here on out i will make the changes needed not ot partake in anything supplied by the companies mention in this movie.

    4. I also just saw “Food Inc”, I have to say that it is so disturbing to see at what length greedy men will go to. From the MacDonalds who changed the entire way all americans eat and obtain food. To the way the Big Business drove out farmers. To the over developing of corn products because Corn is cheap. Which caused hard working immigrants to lose their livelyhood in their own country to then be bussed here to work for those same companies who then just turn them into to INS. To INS and the police who do not police those companies for the treatment of workers and animals. It is amazing how corrupt the political system is to allow those who have worked for these same large companies to then become part of the organizations who police them. CONFLICT of INTEREST. What is wrong with people. To feed us food that is not fit for human consumption. To feed us amonia, manure and corn products which are high in Omega 6 which in adults causes cell growth which is either fat or cancer cells. To allowing our children to be poisoned with chemicals. They are killing us slowly. This is so wrong it is unbelievable. WHY is this hidden from consumers. Why are be kept in the dark about all of this corruption. Let’s make a choice to be healthy an put these companies out of business. Choose Healthy!!!
