Thanks Sophy... you make several excellent points. Americans are just such gluttonous slobs, requiring SO much meat and dairy. There is no way to meet that demand without causing SO much harm to the animals and to the environment. I have been vegetarian for years, and now VEGAN (WHOO-HOO!!!) for almost a year. I have NEVER felt better. The "meatless monday" is a fabulous start!!!

Hi Annika - I did indeed write a letter to the times. Unfortunately they didn't publish it. Maybe next time. Thanks for reading.

While I agree with many of the statements in Sophy's piece, I think we must be careful to get the facts straight and not embellish.
1)rBST only increases production 10-15% over normal.
2)Mastitus is a nasty infection of the udder but I have never heard of birth defects being caused by the problem.
3)Cows have been bred to produce more milk. To call that genetically engineered is a stretch. They have not been genetically modified with cell implantation of foreign gentic material. Cloning is also not really an issue at this point with dairy cattle. The few examples so far have been monumental failures.
