  • Food Deserts are Turning Green

    strawberriesNot too long ago I wrote a blog about “Food Deserts” and what New York City has been doing to stop the spread of them. That blog contained positive news about programs such as Healthy Food/Healthy Communities and the FRESH program that Governor Patterson, Mayor Bloomberg and Speaker Quinn instated. Now even more is being done to provide healthy alternatives.

    The city of New York has approved 1,000 new vegetable and fruit carts that will be spread throughout the five boroughs; 200 are already open. These carts provide fresh, healthy food for people in impoverished neighborhoods. A representative from the Bloomberg administration explained that while it takes a long time to build new grocery stores, carts and are a quick and effective solution. Research shows that the more access people have to healthy food, the more likely they are to eat it.  Most vendors report doing quite well and customers are enjoying low prices.
