Today’s tip: Do a kitchen staple makeover!

Eating sustainable while out in the world isn’t always easy (or even possible!), but it is possible to control what you have at home. Having a kitchen well-stocked with organic/sustainable/local staples will make your sustainable cooking a snap.

Do a kitchen staple makeover! Next time you are at the store, buy an organic staple to replace a conventional one. Buy one item each time you shop, or when you run out of something. Swap dairy for organic/rbgh-free dairy. Replace yogurt, cheese, and milk with hormone free equivalents. Buy organic dried or canned beans to have on hand. Keep a canister full of organic flour. Swap everything – slowly. Broth, cereal, coffee, sugar, tea, bread, condiments, onions/garlic, etc. And don’t forget your freezer!

    1. I would like to add, that when it’s on sale, buy extra. I don’t usually shop at Safeway, but today their brand of biodegradble cleaning products were 2 for $3.00. I stocked up. It’s nice to use natural cleaning products; better for your health and for the environment.

    2. I started a pantry make-over of my own several months ago, approaching it pretty much as you have described. I was surprised to discover how quickly the change was made. I noticed that the more organic I was, the more organic I wanted to be. With very few exceptions I am now organic in pantry, the ‘fridge, and the freezer.
