This tip comes to us from the Eat Well Guide’s Green Fork blog.

healthy-mondayToday’s Healthy Monday tip: Check the USDA recall list.

The nationwide recall of peanuts that surfaced about a month ago has turned out to be one of the largest in US history. The latest stats reveal that 654 people in 44 states have been diagnosed with salmonella poisoning.

Unfortunately, peanut products that may be contaminated with salmonella are still on store shelves or may be in your home. The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family is to check the peanut products recall list from the USDA. The list contains recalled products that contain peanuts that you might not realize (cookies, crackers and cereal), so it is a good idea to continually check the list as they add more items until this outbreak is squelched. I was glad that I checked because I saw that LUNA bars were on the list!

If you are looking to steer clear of peanuts altogether, there are many alternatives to peanut butter. You can spice up your diet with almond butter, soy nut butter, or cashew nut butter. All are a good source of protein too!

    1. People are starting to research exactly what kind of chemicals, pesticides, growth hormones, fertilizers, irradiation, and other additives are used in growing the crops that we consume. It appears to be somewhat disgusting that we barely consume “natural” and healthy foods any more because they are so diluted with various chemicals. Organic foods are becoming more popular everyday as people gain knowledge into what exactly the food that we are feeding our children is actually consisting of. 100% natural foods are the way to go to ensure a healthy and balanced diet. This along with a daily consumption of herbs and vitamins will lead to a much healthier life style, which is a great way to start off our childrens early stages of life.
