The Weekly Pick – Civil Eats
January 14th, 2009 No Comments
Civil Eats – how did this wonderful, simple-looking, but powerfully-voiced blog get past me? As I’m poking around and stumbling on interesting and informative post after post, I think that maybe it is the grown-up and stand-on-its-own version of the blog that started with the Slow Food Nation event last year? Maybe I’m just out of the loop (it’s so difficult to keep up on everything!).In any case, it’s a blog to read. They have over 40 contributors – some familiar names (to me) Anya Fernald (Slow Food Nation and more!), Bryant Terry (Food Activist and Cookbook author), Kurt Michael Friese (Chef and author), Curt Ellis (King Corn), Wayne Pacelle (CEO of the Humane Society of the United States), and the list continues – a diverse group chiming in on food politics.
They post often and keep up on current events. The categories that they have created piqued my interest: Business and Technology, Food Access, In the Kitchen, Eating Culture, Food Policy, Life on the Farm, Energy Policy, Grow Your Own, Re-localize, Environment, Health, and Take Action.
This is how they are describing themselves:
“Civil Eats promotes critical thought about sustainable agriculture and food systems as part of building economically and socially just communities. In our efforts, we support the development of a dialogue among local and national leaders about the American food system, and its effects abroad. Civil Eats can be humorous, serious, academic, philosophical, conversational – its style of conversation is as diverse as its 40+ contributors – but it is always thought provoking, innovative, and focused on food politics.”
OK, after looking up one of the bloggers, Eco-Chef Aaron French, I have learned that this is the old (new and improved!) Slow Food Nation blog… good sleuthing!
So check it out, sign up for their RSS feed, get informed and share your knowledge with your friends and family and anyone else who will listen!
