  • How about some “Naturally Raised” Cloned Meat?

    January 17th, 2008 Posted by 1 Comment

The FDA’s approval of cloned meat for human consumption is a blatant disregard for our health, the animal’s health, and just problematic for many other reasons. The possibility that they might not even label the meat and dairy from these animals is gross. Please take the time to sign this petition from the wonderful Food & Water Watch. Also, for more information here is an older article about cloning, but it’s very informative. Since the first successfully cloned animal was only in 1998- there isn’t such a thing as “really” old information regarding this issue… hmmm, and not really enough time to sufficiently research the impact on the animal’s health or ours.

Another disturbing act from the government to control our food supply- the USDA is proposing a voluntary standard for the claim of “naturally raised” meat. The USDA’s definition is fairly vague, and the Animal Welfare Institute is asking consumers to demand a more solid definition incorporating the physical and behavioral needs of the animals. The definition from the USDA as it is now states:

“Livestock used for the production of meat and meat products have been raised entirely without growth promotants, antibiotics, and have never been fed mammalian or avian by-products. This information shall be contained on any label claim that an animal has been naturally raised.”

Please read the press release from the Animal Welfare Institute explaining their proposal and take action (scroll to the bottom on the press release for ways to comment). The comments are due by the 28th of January- so act now!
