Chemicals Linked to Obesity
March 12th, 2007 No Comments
Washington Post Concerned about obesity? Try cutting back on what biologist Bruce Blumberg calls “obesogens”–chemicals that lead to obesity. The science is new, but several chemicals commonly found in pesticides as well as food and beverage containers caused lab mice to develop more and bigger fat cells, as well as packing on more abdominal fat, especially when exposed to the chemicals during early development. The chemicals in question have been conclusively linked to abnormal sexual development. These findings were presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s annual meeting last month. What’s a health-conscious consumer to do? Skip the pesticides and the packaging whenever possible by purchasing organic, local food from family farms. Find them through the Eat Well Guide.
