Into the van at 7:30 AM with muffins and coffee, down through the Holland Tunnel without bidding farewell to the city in which we work and live and pay too much money for rent and toilet paper. Across the New Jersey Turnpike through industrial complexes passing big rigs hauling tremendous I-beams and processed chicken wings. We sped through driving rain with the stereo up and the headlights on, marveled at the massive conglomeration of highways surrounding our nation’s capitol and got lost on the beltway snaking its way around the city…
The first Eat Well Guide stop, Poste Moderne Brasserie, was an upscale, but surprisingly reasonably priced restaurant located in the heart of Washington DC. Unfortunately, though we’d originally planned to meet one of the chefs at Poste, he wasn’t able to make it.However, the food made the trip well-worth the time spent circling around the beltway. We especially enjoyed the sustainably-raised beef burger, the platter of sustainable cheese, and the righteous thinly-sliced walnut raisin bread. One of us enjoyed a delicious spoonful of rhubarb jam.
