Organic continues to expand; takes meat with it
May 19th, 2006 No CommentsAccording to the Organic Trade Association (OTA) and Nutrition Business Journal, people just can’t get enough organic. They keep buying the stuff and when they’re done more people show up to buy what’s left and demand even more. More specifically, sales of organic food reached $14 billion in 2005 which equates to 2.5% of all retail sales of food. That’s up from 1.9% in 2003. Don’t know what it was in 2004…
Of particular interest (to us especially) is that of organic food sales the fastest-growing food category was organic meat. Sales of organic meat grew 55.4% in 2005. That’s quite the jump. Maybe the Eat Well Guide had something to do with that.
